Dear  Members,

This year’s eagerly-awaited tennis tournaments have been scheduled on 17 January, 2010  for the singles and 7 March, 2010 for the doubles.  The singles tournament will begin with early rounds starting in the morning at 9:00AM and doubles will begin on 7 March, 2010 at 9:00 AM.  The winners will receive the respective President’s Cup with their names engraved and on display at DBS.  1st and 2nd runners-up will also receive souvenir prizes.

Please note the following details:

PARTICIPANTS:              Open to all DSOBA members
DATE :                            17 January for Singles and 7 March, 2010 Doubles matches
(subject to change due to weather and court conditions)

TIME :                               9:00 AM – 1:00 PM for Singles on 17 January, 2010;
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM for Doubles on 7 March, 2010.
PLACE :                            DBS Tennis Court
SYSTEM OF PLAY :         Depending on # of entries, single knock-out system, or single round robin;
final best of 3 sets with tiebreaker at 6 all; all other matches will be
played on an 8 games pro-set with tiebreaker at 8 all.
RULES :                            International rules of tennis will govern all matches. 
On-court disputes will be settled by the Sports Club Committee and its decision will remain final.
TROPHIES:                       PRESIDENT’S CUP to the Champion of each tournament; souvenir trophies to the 1st & 2nd runners-up.
ENTRY FEE:                     HK$50.00 per person.
DEAD-LINE FOR ENTRY: 12 Jan, & 1 March, 2010, will be on first-come-first served to fill a field of 8 players & 8 doubles pairs.

We will be hosting a presentation on university application and interview as well as discussion groups with our fellow alumni.  These old boys are graduates from some of the most prestigious schools in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and United States including Macquarie Univeristy, University of British Columbia, University of Waterloo, Oxford University, Liverpool University, Cornell University, UC Berkeley, Harvard University, MIT, Yale University, Duke University, Indiana University, Stanford University and Brown University.  Please don’t miss this rare opportunity to obtain first hand career advice and tips on the whole application process from them.

Speaker: Norris Yang (‘ 68) was the President of our DSOBA from 1992-1995, Chairman of the Hong Kong Mediation Council (2003-2006) and the leading Chinese speaking Mediator in Hong Kong and internationally for commercial disputes. He is the first Asian panel member of the International Mediation Institute (the Hague, www.imimediation.org) and the first Hong Kong lawyer on the Panel of International  Distinguished Neutrals of the Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution (New York, www.cpradr.org).

 

Topic: Mediation- an effective process to settle litigation in Hong Kong

The recent Civil Justice Reform (“CJR” – effective 2nd April 2009) has changed the landscape for conducting litigation in Hong Kong. The new Practice Direction (“PD”) of the Chief Justice on mediation (effective 2nd January 2010) will encourage plaintiffs and defendants (and their solicitors) to consider mediation. Norris will share his insight on how mediation can be used to save time, money, headaches, emotions and relationships in a litigation, when disputes occur and prevent them from escalating to your case in the courts.
