Dear Fellow Members,

DSOBA WARGAME DAY

Are you ready for some action? We are delighted to invite you to the first DSOBA Wargame Day.

For those who are not familiar with the sport, this is a team activity where by teams compete to achieve designated objectives. Some countries call this airsoft skirmishing. For those who have played paintball, this is not too far off. The basic principle behind the game is as follows. 2 teams with airsoft replicas, eye / face protection, camouflage clothing and ammunition (BB pellets), go out in to an arena (usually similar to paintball playing fields) and try to shoot the enemy on the opposing team. Every time someone is hit by a BB, they are considered 'out' of the game, either until the game restarts, or after a short regeneration period. Many games are variations on this theme, but some are quite unique.

For those who are worried about safety, airsoft replicas, while they are guns, are perfectly safe to use in a well-organized wargame. BBs travel at a safe speed that is incapable of inflicting a penetrative injury. The only real dangers lie with BB hits to the eyes, which could potentially cause harm, and hence all players are provided with face masks and are required to wear them at all times inside the arena. And yes, you may end up with some minor bruises if you get hit in close range.

Please mark your calendar for this day of fun on Sunday, 18 November 2012. The day will start early in the morning and will finish mid-afternoon. Beginners and veterans are both welcome. We will have marshals to help out and will provide instructions for beginners. We will make teams within our group that play against each other so we do not have to worry about foul play or bad behavior from other groups.

Venue: we have reserved a spot at W28 in Tin Shui Wai, one of the best outdoor arenas in Hong Kong with many well designed warzones. For those who like to drive there, you can find maps and driving directions on their website:http://www.w28hk.com. For those who prefer to not drive, we will reserve seats on a shuttle that leaves from Mongkok and with bring you back to Mongkok when you finish. For those bringing your own equipment, please make sure that the power of your airsoft replicas are under 1.3J and bring your own mask. Precise details of pick-up point and meet-up time will be shared with you closer to the event.
Prices of this full day event for DSOBA members will be:
For those who need gear rental and Mongkok shuttle                     : $330
For those who bring their own gear but need Mongkok shuttle      : $230
For those who need gear rental but not the shuttle                          : $300
For those who bring their own gear and make their own way there: $200

Lunch will be provided by the venue and is included in the prices

Please contact Ms. Maggie Ho/Ms. Sonia Huen at Tel: 2713 5268 or e-mail: maggie@dsoba.org /sonia@dsoba.org to:
(a) confirm your attendance to the game before 2nd November 2012;
(b) update/provide your full contact details (mobile number, e-mail address, cert year)
(c) indicate clearly whether you will be:
a. Bringing your own gear

We have reserved a limited number of spots, and they will be allotted on a first come first serve basis. We look forward to seeing you there.

Best,

DSOBA Social Sub-committee

Thomas Wu (‘94)

Note: While this is undoubtedly an exciting and fun game, the DSOBA would require all participants to be responsible players for the safety of their own and others during the game.

Obituary – Maurice Siu

Dear Old Boys and Friends of DBS,

Maurice Siu Cheuk Ming (nickname 燒雞, Class of 1989), 42, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 21, 2012, at Kwong Wah Hospital with his family present.

Maurice had been suffering with germ cell cancer for the past three years.  He had bravely confronted and fought the disease until he succumbed to cancer and drifted off to be with the Lord last Friday.  Maurice is survived by his beloved wife, Irene Fung and his adored 2-year-old daughter Siu Chuen Yan.  He is also survived by his parents and several siblings.

Maurice was born on October 11, 1969 and was the eighth of the ten children.  Maurice was an outstanding track athlete during his years in DBS.  He broke several records in long and short distance run, in particular, his record in Division A 1500-meter long run had not been beaten for more than two decades.  After graduation, Maurice had been actively participating in the DSOBA and was an ex-General Committee member.  Maurice received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Hong Kong and had spent over 10 years teaching math and physical education in different primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong.  Despite the fact that Maurice had been battling cancer in recent years, as a Christian, he still travelled around sharing his own experiences, hoping to enlighten others to have faith, courage and persistence in time of adversity.

The following is the arrangement of the Funeral Service for Maurice:

·         Funeral Service – a Funeral Service will be held at the All Saints’ Cathedral (address: No. 11 Pak Po Street, Mongkok) at 2:30pm on Saturday, October 20, 2012.  The Very Reverend Samson Fan will be officiating.  The family will receive relatives, friends as well as all members of the DBS family at the Service.  Kindly refrain from driving as parking space around the Cathedral is limited.

·         Cremation – the Funeral Service will be followed by cremation which will take place at Cape Collinson Crematorium.  Free shuttle bus service is available to pick up guests from the All Saints’ Cathedral to the crematorium.  A return shuttle bus will bring guests back to the Cathedral after the cremation.

·         Repast – a repast will be held at Sportful Garden Chinese Restaurant 陶源酒家 at Stanford Hotel 仕德福酒店at 5:00pm on the same day.  Stanford Hotel is situated right opposite to the Cathedral on Soy Street.  For those who are planning to attend the repast, kindly send an email to deansamsonfan@gmail.com to confirm your attendance.

·         Sharing Contribution – in memory of Maurice, the family is initiating a call for old boys and friends to share their words of condolence, memories and thoughts about Maurice.  Please email your sharing to deansamsonfan@gmail.com on or before Monday, October 8, 2012.  The sharing received will be featured in the service booklets.

·         Donations – in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations be made to the Hong Kong Cancer Fund (香港癌症基金會).  Envelopes for donations will also be available at the Cathedral.

Hockey

“DSOBA Mens’ Hockey Team held a pre-season gathering on Sept 8th.  The event had a great turn out, with over 20 old and current boys attended.  The afternoon kicked off with casual mingling, then followed by speeches from team captains, guests and team committee members.  Special thanks to DSOBA Sports Committee Chair Mr. John Low (‘82) and Mr. Mark Rosario (Founding teacher for the Mens’ hockey team) for joining the gathering and giving immense support to the team.  The boys shared stories from past matches and training, and we see a lot of good vibe and enthusiasm amongst the team members.
The pre-season friendly match on Sept 2nd against Punjab was a great win for the team, and we look forward to the commencement of the season this month. “
